| Roberta’s photographic
practice draws from a wide range of unique life experience.
She began her life aboard a sailboat where she lived with
her family for the first fourteen years of her life. During
this period the Holden family would spend three months of
the year harvesting wild rice on remote lakes in Manitoba,
under very basic living conditions. She is currently an active
Search and Rescuer with the Lions Bay Mountain Rescue team
and is past president of the Varsity Outdoor Club of UBC.
She is an experienced mountaineer, climber and backcountry
skier and has traveled extensively in a self-propelled fashion
in high latitude regions from Antarctica to the Canadian north
as well as throughout much of the developing world. In 2004,
she was awarded the Jen Higgins Award from the Alpine Club
of Canada. Roberta spent two years sailing single-handed on
the professional ‘La Solitaire du Figaro’ racing
circuit based in France after a career of Olympic dinghy racing.
In 2000, she was awarded the Offshore Sailor of the Year award
from the Canadian Yachting Association.
