Ms. Shirley has a Bachelor
of Science in Art Education from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn,
New York with further study in Fine Arts at the Brooklyn College,
Brooklyn, NY. She taught art in the New York City public school
system for 7 years before immigrating to Canada.
Always a landscape artist, painting on site,
she has lived in Rankin Inlet in Nunavut for the past 27 years
and has painted the arctic barrenlands and Hudson Bay as the
ice breaks up and through the brilliant summer months on into
the first snowfall on the multi-coloured autumn tundra. She
explores the vast remoteness for views that best reflect this
unique and unpredictable land. While based in a summer tent
camp or cabin, the many variations in sky, sea and land can
be observed and captured. These watercolours are the basis
for oils and further landscape painting development throughout
the year.
Her works can be seen at the Matchbox
Gallery in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut. |
