| ARTIST STATEMENT ON POLAR
REGIONS |
Traveling the world in search of remote,
unaltered views of the landscape to paint and draw has been
a passion of mine for over 20 years. When in 1995, after crossing
the Arctic Circle and getting my first glimpse of Greenland
from the air on a trip to Iceland, I vowed to visit the Arctic.
In 2002 and again in 2005 that dream became a reality when
I traveled aboard the Akademik Ioffe through the Canadian
High Arctic and to Greenland with renowned artist Doris McCarthy
and other fellow artists. Since 2005, I have been involved
with helping to create a greater awareness of the Arctic through
my work as an artist, and my involvement with Linda Mackey
and Arctic Quest and through my teaching at Penn State University.
Recently, when my 11 year-old son was asked to write what
he would wish for if he could have anything answered, “To
see the Arctic and/or Antarctica before the ice melts”.
In my own small way, I hope to contribute to a greater awareness
and the preservation of these fragile landscapes so that future
generations will be able to experience their sheer power and
beauty as I have. |
