London, Paris, New York….Dawson
City? Over a century ago Dawson City was titled the “Paris
of the North”, and in the decade since her arrival,
fashion designer Megan Waterman has been busy reviving the
frontier flair established long ago.
Megan Waterman comes from Canada’s
Yukon Territory. As a designer, Megan is inspired by the north
and regularly integrates local materials such as antler, bone
and fur into her designs. Ms. Waterman has been recognized
locally at the Dawson Fur Festival, regionally at the Wild
by Design fashion galas, nationally on APTN, CBC, and Style
Magazine, and, internationally by Fashion Television and Arpel
Fur, of Milan. In 2005, Waterman was invited to participate
in the Great Northern Arts Festival and received the Best
Designer award for her contributions and was interviewed and
filmed for CBC’s ArtSpots. Ms. Waterman was filmed for
CBC’s acclaimed television show Venture on her 2005
trip to the North American Fur and Fashion Exposé in
Montreal (NAFFEM) and made a significant impression on the
industry during NAFFEM 2006. Megan Waterman and her new business
Northern Garments Inc. (NGI) were recently nominated alongside
the best in the Canadian Apparel Industry and won Style Magazine’s
Fashion Export Award for Industry Innovation (www.northerngarments.com).
NGI was also recently highlighted during the opening and closing
ceremonies of the 2007 Canada Winter Games.
As an environmentalist, Megan actively advocates
for fur harvesters to be recognized as Stewards of the land
and water who share values with other conservationists; and
to put her money where her mouth is - NGI is contributing
a significant portion of its profits towards habitat protection. |
