From my perspective, the power of the North
is very strong and has many faces. The cold, the long frozen
winter months and the distances have kept people away and
this is good. There is nothing to equal the exhilaration of
the space up here and the limitless landscape still untouched
by man. The land is our connection to our shared human history
and must be kept safe. No gesture is too small. I hope that
my paintings will contribute to the growing awareness of disaster
and be a witness and a voice for this treasured but vulnerable
environment. |
This untouched and unusual part of the
Arctic landscape along the shores of Hudson Bay has absorbed
me for over 25 years. It is part of the Polar world seen in
another light. It is my home and I consider myself incredibly
fortunate to be able to experience this inaccessible part
of our beautiful planet first hand, as part of my life, and
to explore some of its essence through my watercolours and
oils. It is an artistic relationship in which the subject
is the determining energy...I could never impose a ‘concept’
or ‘idea’ on so abstract and extraordinary a collection
of shapes, colours, weather and space as is this multi-detailed
land around the Hudson Bay. It shows me the way.
The winds, the tides, the cold air - all
give an edge and an immediacy to the experience of painting
on site which influences the final work and which I love.
The land and conditions limit my access and my painting time.
I travel on tundra trails by ATV and hike further to my goal.
When I get out of town, brush and paint in hand, I am always
welcomed by the transcendent vastness of the barrenlands,
the sky and the expanse of Hudson Bay. I am honored to share
my good fortune with others through my art. |
